Zirconium dioxide occurs naturally mostly as monoclinic crystals, primarily in the mineral baddeleyite. Zirconia in the form of cubic single crystals is extremely rare in nature and can be synthesized artificially. It is a widely used synthetic gemstone as a substitute for diamond.
