Production Process
▲ Melting and Casting
Melting silver: Silver blocks or scraps are placed in a crucible and heated to a specific temperature with charcoal, melting the silver into liquid silver.
Casting the blank: The molten silver is poured into a cast iron mold, often called an oil bath, to form a silver blank.
▲ Beating and Wiredrawing
Beating, Stripping, and Wiredrawing: Depending on the production requirements, the silver blank is heated and hammered onto an anvil with a hammer into thin sheets. This process is called "beating." The silver blank is then rolled into a cylindrical shape, known as "stripping." Finally, the silver strip is drawn into thin wire using specialized tools. These processes require precise control of the temperature to ensure the silver sheet is perfectly formed. If the temperature is too high, the silver will melt easily; if the temperature is too low, the silver will be difficult to beat. These silver sheets can be used to make jewelry such as silver plaques and bells, while silver bars and silver wire are suitable for crafting finer pieces such as silver collars, bracelets, and anklets, as well as necklaces and floral ornaments.
▲ Stamping and Gluing
Stamping: The silver sheet is placed in a tin mold and hammered with a hammer to stamp out the basic shape of the silver object. This process is also known as "bracketing."
Gluing: Glue is prepared and applied to a wooden board to a suitable thickness. It is then baked over a charcoal fire until the glue is soft. Next, the general shape of the silver object is pressed onto the glue to secure its form.
▲ Hammering and Welding
Embracing: Using small steel chisels and tools designed specifically for silverware, such as round, flat, and crescent-shaped tips, intricate designs such as water birds, fortune, longevity, and happiness are carved into the general shape of the silver object. This step is not only highly technical but also requires the craftsman to possess profound artistic cultivation and exquisite carving skills.
Welding and Decoration: Based on the design requirements of the silverware, the relevant components are welded together and decorated with intricate patterns. Boric acid solution is used as a flux during the welding process, combined with heating from the soldering iron and a kerosene lamp to ensure successful welding.
▲ Polishing and Decontamination
Polishing: The shaped silverware is placed on a small bronze anvil and gently struck with a small hammer to refine the shape. Subsequently, a steel file is used to carefully remove burrs until the surface is as smooth as a mirror. This step ensures a smooth and even surface.
Decontamination: The refined silverware is immersed in dilute sulfuric acid or alum solution to thoroughly remove mold and dirt, restoring its original purity.
▲ Blue and Emerald
Blue and Emerald: Using a silver-specific pigment and abrasive, the pigment is meticulously applied to the silverware using a small spoon. A kerosene lamp is lit, the silverware is held close to the flame, and with the help of a blowpipe, the silver and pigment blend together, creating an exquisite pattern.
Through a series of meticulous processes, silverware gradually reveals its exquisite beauty. The above steps describe the production process of simple silver jewelry. More complex silver jewelry requires a more complex process. Every step in the silver jewelry production process is crucial, requiring patience and skill to ultimately create a beautiful finished product.
