MOISSANITE COLOR CARD
Moissanite has the following characteristics:
1. Specific Gravity: Moissanite has a specific gravity of 3.22. For unmounted material, a methyl iodide solution with a specific gravity of 3.32 can be used to distinguish moissanite from diamond (3.52).
2. Hardness: Moissanite has a Mohs hardness of 9.25. A diamond (grade 10) will scratch its surface, while a corundum (grade 9) will not.
3. Conductivity: Many moissanite stones are electrical conductors.
4. Optical Properties: Moissanite exhibits birefringence, with its refractive index and reflective properties differing from other gemstones.
5. Polishing: Moissanite can be polished in a uniform direction, with parallel girdle polishing lines, which are particularly noticeable between adjacent facets.
6. Cut: Most cut moissanite stones have rounded edges.
7. Inclusions: Inclusions in moissanite are often needle-shaped and arranged in parallel. Fine, parallel reflection lines can be observed in some moissanite stones.
